bell ringers Bell Ringer assignments (warmups) are allowed to be corrected until the end of the week. These corrections must be done during the allotted time in class after the bell has rung or in tutorials as journals are not allowed to be taken home. These corrections can get the student FULL CREDIT back on their assignment! quizzes Quizzes are returned by Thursday at the latest and are due that Friday. Quizzes are sent home-so corrections can be completed during tutorials or at home by the student. Quiz corrections can get the student HALF the credit back (or up to a 70 if original grade was below a 40.) test corrections Test corrections are to be completed in tutorials only and can receive up to HALF the credit back (or up to a 70 if original grade was below a 40) if correction form is completed correctly.
POLICY FOR ABSENCES
All notes, videos of our lessons, assignments, and answer keys for self-checking can be found on our class website. When a student is absent it is important that they are responsible in accessing these materials independently or coming into tutorials upon arrival back to school to get what they missed. Students have as many days as they were absent to complete their assignment for full credit. If a student is absent for a quiz or a test, they have until the Friday following the absence to take the missed assessment in my room during tutorials AND to complete it’s corrections. Any tests or quizzes not taken in the allotted time will receive a 0. PLEASE speak to me if an extension needs to be arranged.
Students are responsible for their own devices and should keep them out of sight and silent/off. (No devices in pockets!!! If we can see it, we have to take it up!) Students who are unable to keep phones out of sight will have them taken up and given to an administrator.
zQ: Will my child have homework? A: Yes! Your child will be bringing home daily practice almost every night. If they struggle with it, they can check the key online or come into tutoring for help. They can also message me on Remind or email me if they have a specific question and I may be able to send a link to a helpful video or clarification on a question. They also take notes in their journal, so that should be their first resource when they are struggling on a question!
Q: Do you give extra credit? A: No, I do not give any extra credit assignments. The best way to raise your child's grade is to correct tests (up to a week later), turn in missing assignments (up to a week later), and to be proactive in getting help on content they are weak in BEFORE they take a test on it. I do not give extra credit assignments because there is so much practice they can get at home from Daily Work they do not finish in class.
Q: How can I raise my student's grades? A: Your child can raise their current grade with corrections on Bell Ringers, weekly Quizzes, and Tests. These must be done in tutorials before or after school. Student grades can be improved long term by keeping their journal updated with any notes taken in class for reference, doing their daily practice (homework), watching any online video tutorials that Ms. Ryan uploads to iTunes U, and being proactive in getting help on content they are weak in BEFORE they take a test on it. They can also complete test reviews to prepare for the test.
Q: When is your tutoring? A: My tutorials are every morning from 7:50-8:15 and every afternoon except Tuesdays and Fridays from 3:30-3:55.
Q: Is there something my student can practice at home to improve their math skills? A: There are quite a few options for your child to get some extra practice at home! ---Our class website has a PDF version of the work we practice every day, along with video tutorials and answer keys so they can check themselves at home! We don't finish the entire Daily Work page every day during class, so this is a great first choice when looking for extra practice at home. --For more ways to practice check the "Online Resources" page!
Q: What does each grade mean? A: -Daily Practice Grade (10%): This is a weekly grade given over homework completion for the week. If your child turns in an assignment late, it takes 10 points off of their weekly homework grade for every day it is late. I grade Daily Practice assignments for work shown - no work, no credit! -Journal (10%): This is a grade given for students over keeping up with their journals -Bell Ringers (40%): Your child does a warmup question every day at the beginning of class. It is typically over the material they learned the day before. I use this as a formative assessment to see who needs to be pulled in a small group for a targeted reteach. These questions can be corrected throughout the week for FULL CREDIT - so if your child receives a grade lower than a 100, it means they did not attempt to fix any that they missed throughout the week. -Quizzes (40%): This is a 5-question quiz given midweek to assess your child's mastery of the current week's content. This is a GREAT indicator of how your child is doing on the week's skill. They are graded and returned every Thursday, so be on the lookout for it. Corrections are available for HALF the credit back! -Weekly Tests (50%): This is a 10-question assessment given at the end of the week. It is made up of 70% material from the current week and 30% spiraled skills.. So anything we have covered during the school year is fair game. There is a test review available weekly for your child to prepare for the assessment. Corrections are available for HALF CREDIT back!
